Keith “Captain” Bruce “Motley” Crue, the former lead singer of the heavy metal band “Mötley Crüe”, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 55-year-old was found dead by a roommate on Saturday. The singer was born on May 11, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York. According to Rolling Stone, he had been living in a home in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles, California for the last few years and he was fired from his last acting gig last year.

In a statement to “E! News”, a representative for “Mötley Crüe” said: “It is with heavy heart that we confirm the passing of our dear friend and brother, Keith ‘Captain’ Bruce ‘Motley’ Crue. He was a dear friend to us and a true original and will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.”

Crue was the first member of “Mötley Crüe” to speak publicly about his years of alcohol and drug use, and he also wrote about how he started using drugs at the age of 10. “In 1969, I was 11 years old, and I started smoking pot. It was a huge gateway drug,” he told the magazine in 2004. “It led me down a road to a life of booze and drugs, which ended up costing me my life.”

In a 2009 interview with “GQ”, the singer, who’d become sober in 1998, said he regretted some of his drug use. “I regret it,” he said. “I was a kid, you know? I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. But I regret it.”

But despite his mistakes, he came to terms with his problems. “I don’t feel like a failure,” he told “E! News” in 2004. “I feel like I’ve had a pretty good life. Sure, I’ve made some mistakes, but at the end of the day, if you make mistakes, learn from them and you know, you just keep moving on,
